Women's Hair Loss - Know The Causes Before You Can Find the Solution


Wondering about women's hair loss? Women face unique challenges when it comes to losing their hair. They don't lose hair the same way men do. And there are many different underlying causes of female hair loss that don't apply to men.

#1 Hereditary Baldness
Although not as common in women as in men, women can suffer from hereditary or genetic predisposition to baldness. But unlike men, women don't lose their hair in the same pattern as a man does. Women tend to become thinner overall - especially at the crown.
While there are medications that can slow this down - like finasteride (i.e. Propecia for women), they may come with side effects. And once you start on these meds, you have to continue on them for the rest of your life.
Another option would be to get a hair transplant which will take hair from an area that is not predisposed to balding and transplant it into your thinning areas. The advantage to this is that it's your own natural growing hair - and you don't have to mess with potions, medications or special shampoos for the rest of your life.
#2 Low Iron
Women are very prone to getting low in iron. And low iron can cause hair loss in women. Why? Because iron is a transports oxygen to different parts of the body including hair follicles. Without oxygen, hair production slows and some follicles can enter into dormant phases prematurely.
If you think this is the case, be sure to check with your doctor who will do bloodwork to make sure you are low in iron. If you are low in iron, he or she will probably advise you to start iron supplements. In a few months you may begin to see your hair thickening up again.
#3 Poor Diet
Another cause of women's hair loss is poor diet. Women don't eat a lot of protein (which is a building block for your hair and nails). They also tend to eat less in general - so they may not be getting enough vitamins and nutrients that help to grow a healthy full head of hair.
Make sure you're getting a rounded diet including enough protein, high quality carbs (skip the sugar, cookies and pastries), and omega 3 fats (oily fish, flax seeds, etc.)
#4 Pregnancy
After women give birth they often notice that their hair seems to be falling out. This is actually not the case - what happens is that during pregnancy, the natural shedding process slows down.
After the hormones from pregnancy leave the body, however, a large number of hair follicles can enter into the shedding phase at the same time, resulting in handfuls of hair coming out in the shower. This condition will correct itself with time. Give it a few months and if you're still noticing hair loss, talk to your doctor.
#5 Traction Alopecia
This is basically hair loss due to too much pulling and abuse of your hair. So for example you may be pulling your hair back in a pony tail too tightly, causing the fine hairs in your front hairline to come out.
Over time, this can cause a "receding hairline" look - and unfortunately there's not much you can do at that point, except get a hair transplant. So if you can catch this early, stop the tight hairstyles as much as possible to let your hair regrow.
